Parents Frequently Asked Questions

1. How can you help my child?
Eva Mazzei Tutoring provides a number of services designed to improve your child’s learning experiences in school and in life. These services include one-on-one tutoring, tutoring in group settings, in-school advocacy, and creation of learning routines in the home. Group tutoring has unique benefits. It provides a warm, social environment for learning, fosters connections with other children, and creates the positive relationship with group learning that may be lacking in school. Learning in a group setting has been shown to raise self-esteem and add a much needed element of fun to what can be a difficult process. One-on-one tutoring is also available either in the office or in the home. This can be more relaxing for the socially cautious child, and more convenient for busy family schedules. In addition to tutoring services, Eva Mazzei Tutoring advocates for your child in schools by helping restructure alienating programming and ensuring the mandate of individualized care at school is met. This involves attending school-based team meetings, and hosting discussions with resource teachers, principals, and all relevant staff.

Finally, Eva Mazzei Tutoring equips parents/guardians with resources to advocate for their child across various learning environments, and establishes personalized routines for the home to keep the learning consistent and in motion to instill a thorough, lifelong love of learning.

2. Does my child need to be labeled?

Only insofar as it is helpful to you and your child. A label can be useful in acquiring extra in-school support, and can be a source of reassurance. However, labels and diagnoses do not necessarily inform the personalized programming created at Eva Mazzei Tutoring. All learning regimens are designed according to your child’s individual needs, not a broad idea of their diagnosis.

3. Why isn’t my child getting help in school for their ADD/ADHD?
While executing functioning challenges often require additional care or alternative teaching practices, in the public school system, ADD/ADHD alone are not considered sufficient to receive extra support without the presence of a language based learning disability. This can make it a challenge to provide your child with the help they need. To ensure that children with ADD/ADHD do not slip through the cracks, Eva Mazzei Tutoring can meet with your child’s educators to help them adapt learning materials and classroom settings to be inclusive for your child’s unique learning methods.

4. What do you do differently from the schools?
Eva Mazzei Tutoring embraces the exceptional in your child. Small learning settings allow Eva Mazzei Tutoring to support your child’s gifts and excellence with the time and personalized programming they deserve. We empower each individual child by viewing their unique thought processes not as problematic, but as something to be celebrated and worked with rather than against. Eva Mazzei Tutoring utilizes a multisensory learning process that not only serves to create an enjoyable learning environment, but allows the brain to store all learned information across several planes for deeper, more complete learning. Your child will be so engaged, they may not know they’re learning at all.

5. How do you help schools adapt their classroom settings to benefit my child?
Eva Mazzei Tutoring will give teachers suggestions on how to tailor their classrooms to support a wider array of learning styles. This ranges from changes such as colour coding white boards, to rearranging desk layout for improved focus and impulse control, to coordinating parent-teacher agenda checklists to support higher executive functioning, to facilitating the use of exercise balls instead of chairs for kinesthetic learners. Whatever your child needs.

6. Do I need a psych ed assessment/what do I do with mine?
A psych ed assessment is (unfortunately) necessary to receive additional support in the public school system. Eva Mazzei Tutoring can help interpret the results in a manner that does not leave your child feeling disheartened. Mazzei also assists in keeping schools accountable for any required adaptations.

7. What’s the difference between your services and government funded services for ASD?
The answer falls into two categories:
Firstly, Eva Mazzei Tutoring does not follow a standardized, one-size-fits-all program. Eva Mazzei Tutoring follows behaviour modification programs specifically selected for your child.
Secondly, with Eva Mazzei Tutoring, there is no several-month-long waitlist. You can begin helping your child today.
