1. Why won’t my student listen/do their work?
Students with diverse learning needs aren’t all served by current educational practices, and there are a number of factors contributing to a student’s unwillingness to participate heartily in the classroom. Some classroom environments are over-stimulating, which prevents students from doing their work or even existing comfortably in the space. These external factors deeply (and often subconsciously) affect a student’s performance. Fortunately, overwhelming spaces can be remedied with relative ease.
Often, neurodivergent pupils don’t feel like they are able to succeed before they even start, which can lead to a mental and emotional shutting down. The task before them may seem too large, and not understanding instructions can make them feel unintelligent. The education they have received up to the point at which you became their teacher has likely not been tailored to their learning styles, and as such, they’ve been poorly equipped to complete the task in front of them. Neurodivergent brains have their own unique learning superpowers that often go unrecognized. These powers can be tapped into by shifting the way instructions are delivered and by providing emotional engagements and attachments to the work they’re doing, which can make work previously considered boring vital and fun for any mind.
2. How would my classroom benefit from Eva Mazzei Educational Consulting?
Eva Mazzei Educational Consulting can restructure your classroom from a linear space to a multi-faceted, tactile, colourful environment that is inclusive of the various learning styles of your students, neurodivergent and neurotypical alike. Creating a welcoming classroom environment that cconveys instructions and expectations clearly lessens the need for students to be “pulled out.” Each room Eva Mazzei Educational Consulting transforms is done according to the needs of that specific class, which manifests in hundreds of unique ways. This could include the creation of a bright, colour coded math corner, a comfortable library, the introduction of headphones, or the inclusion of checklists that break down assignment instructions step-by-step.
Eva Mazzei Educational Consulting helps teachers adjust the delivery of their instruction for increased clarity and effectiveness, leaving no child left behind and creating a better classroom experience for you and your student. As a team, Eva Mazzei meets with teachers to instate simple changes that make all the difference in the world. These easy shifts, such as marking tests differently, or altering the way the whiteboard is used, can save teachers and students from frustration and burnout.
3. How can I help my student get organized?
Getting to know your student is always the essential first step to ensuring their success in school. Different students have different needs. Some benefit from a single binder for all subjects, or from separating each subject into its own binder. Some students benefit from use of an agenda, some students benefit from checklists. All students benefit from having their successes acknowledged and receiving diversified rewards for good work and behaviour.
Well-intentioned attempts at helping students with executive functioning challenges often fail is when there is inadequate consistency. It is imperative that routines are reinforced daily and that there is communication between the school and the parents/guardians. If expectations are laid out and rigorously upheld at the beginning of the school year, teachers will see great improvement in the coming months. Lack of consistency can leave students confused, frustrated, and searching for loopholes in their programming.
